Vinca minor Creeping Myrtle, Periwinkle, Vinca zones 4-9 Bloom Color: Blue Bloom Time: May-June Foliage Color: Green Height: 6-12" Spread: 12"+, Spreader Myrtle's glossy, evergreen leaves are covered with blue flowers in May and June. This plant thrives in shade. Useful on banks, slopes, under trees and as a ground cover. Common Name: Creeping Myrtle, Periwinkle, Vinca Botanical Name: Vinca minor Type: Evergreen ground cover Soil Preference: Neutral, Well-drained, Sandy, Clay Light Requirements: Sun to Shade Attributes: This plant is considered mostly allergy free and causes little or no allergy problems in most people. Description: An excellent, weed-smothering, evergreen groundcover with small, solid dark green leaves. From mid to late spring, lovely lavender-blue flowers about the size of a nickle appear just above the foliage, creating a tranquil effect. Additional flowers may appear sporadically in summer and fall. Vinca spreads by creeping across the ground and rooting at each node that touches the surface. This makes it an excellent plant to use for erosion control on slopes. Once established, it is a no-maintenance plant. Cut back hard in spring to enjoy the new growth and protect in winter by mulching.
