Product Description & Reviews

Let's bring back the hybrid American Chestnut! American Chestnut Trees were the most important food and timber tree in the Eastern hardwood forest years ago. In 1904, Chestnut blight fungus devastated the population of these magnificent trees. Slowly but surely, the American Chestnut is making a comeback with the help of science. The dense foliage grows into a rounded canopy providing shade and sweet tasting chestnuts for human consumption and wildlife. The leaves are ovate having sharp, spear-like points and are about 5" long and 2" wide. The topside of the leaf is a dark green with a light green underside turning a bright yellow, gold and brown for fall. The American Chestnut Tree is the tallest of the chestnuts know to grow up to 100 feet! For success in growing this historical tree, plant in average, somewhat dry, well-drained, acidic soil with full sun. Specifications: Mature Height: 50'+; Soil: Average, somewhat dry, well-drained, acidic soil; sandy; Hardiness Zones: 4-8; Sun Exposure: Full Sun; Characteristics: Ovate with sharp, spear-like points; about 5" long and 2" wide; dark green on to with light green underside; fall foliage of bright yellow, gold and brown; Bloom Color: Long catkins that have a distinctive, strong, sweet odor; Fruit: Hard, brown husk and hair-like spines containing chestnuts until they ripen and split open; Growth Rate: Slow to Moderate; Intolerance: Blight and calcareous (limestone) soils. Tip: Potted dormant perennials can be kept in a well-lit cool/cold area (ie. Garage, shed, even in a protected area outdoors) until ready for spring planting. Do not allow them to completely dry out. In winter, plants will be shipped dormant.
